Sex sting forces Andhra governor to quit

In India, News on December 27, 2009 at 12:24 am

Andhra Pradesh governor N D Tiwari has stepped down under pressure from the central government, maintaining that he was a victim of a frame-up in the sex-tape scandal. The dramatic development came a day after the 86-year-old veteran congressman’s pictures in a sex romp were flashed in the media.

The center asked Mr. Tiwari to vacate Andhra Raj Bhavan after a high-level meeting in which it was held that pictures purportedly showing the Andhra governor in the “intimate” company of three women had rendered his continuation untenable.

While resigning, Tiwari cited “health grounds” as the reason for putting in his papers to the President.

Congress welcomed the resignation.

The media in Hyderabad had flashed purported pictures of the governor in a compromising position with three women, which created a furor. While Raj Bhavan denied it and secured a high court injunction against public airing of footage, it had stirred a controversy which Congress could not ignore.

Indira birthday- Congress praises her vision

In India, News on November 19, 2009 at 10:15 am

Mangalore, November 19, 2009: The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee today pledged its support to the movement to empower women. The occasion for such a pledge was the 92nd birthday of former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi.

Former Minister Mr. B. Ramanatha Rai who is also the District Congress President paying tribute to the late premier said that this was a great day for paying tribute to Mrs. Gandhi not just by flowers and prayers but also through taking a pledge to work for her ideals. The most important drive she took in her lifetime was the empowerment of women socially and economically. At present time the women are threatened by fascist forces in the state by divesting them their rights to be empowered socially and economically.

Later addressing the party leaders and members Mr. Rai said that, India gained a lot from some of Indira Gandhi’s policies including those dealing with economy, Green Revolution, nationalisation of banks and many more social movements for women. She gave priority to women in the field of science and technology and communication. Mrs. Gandhi was one of the top leaders of the world which was evident by the respect she commanded from her contemporaries like Margaret Thatcher, Richard Nixon, Charles De Gaulle and Golda Meyer.

It was due to the far sightedness of Mrs. Gandhi that Indian economy was built so strong in foundation that it could escape the ravages of world economic recession. Today American banks are facing crisis and we Indian’s saved from these crisis because of the nationalization of the banks. Mr. Rai said she had fought terrorism and finally gave her life for the country. She always had told that she would fight for the country till her last drop of blood.

congress-indiraDistrict Congress committee president and former president of the Mangalore Bar Association Mr. Taranath Shetty Kallige on this occasion said that Gandhi family dedicated their life to the nation to bring peace and harmony. Mrs. Indira Gandhi tried to improve the lives of Indians. Her main accomplishments were improving relations with the Soviet Union and victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan.  Economically, Indira Gandhi led India to one of the fastest growing economies in the world toward the end of her time as prime minister, he said.

On this occasion Ms. Violet Pereira was welcomed into the Congress fold as the general secretary of the Minority cell of the Congress district unit.  Mr. Rai felicitated her by offering her a bouquet.
